I got this book for Christmas because I’m a huge NASA and Apollo 11 fan.
In this book, Buzz Aldrin tells about his life and gives useful advice for his own life. I had to smile and laugh very often, but I was able to agree with him really often and still thought about some of what he had written days later.
He was the 2nd person on the moon, although he would actually have been the 1st from the mission plan. But the way they ended up in the Eagle it was a lot easier for Neil to get out first. I loved the way he admitted he was jealous of Neil in the beginning, but also realized that Neil was just the right person. Today, Buzz is even happy not to have been the 1st person.
He also gives an incredible number of private insights into his life, for example how he and his family were doing with his alcohol addiction. Of course, he also wrote about the Mars mission. I can only agree with him and his arguments are excellent and conclusive, in my opinion.
Many say yes, we cannot go to Mars yet because no return flight is guaranteed. But Buzz Aldrin is right, the first settlers who came to America didn’t worry about coming back either. And the flight to the moon was risky too, there was no guarantee that they would come back, but we did anyway! And there are enough people who are aware of these risks and would still take off immediately, for example, the Mars One Mission.
At the end of the book, I had a real lump in my throat. He wrote what it was like for him when he found out about Neil’s death and what the funeral was like, and how he and Michael now have to celebrate the 50 years of Apollo 11 without Neil.

Dieses Buch ist so unfassbar gut!!!
Ich habe diese Buch zu Weihnachten bekommen, da ich ein großer NASA und Apollo 11 Fan bin.
In diesem Buch erzählt Buzz Aldrin über sein Leben und gibt nützliche Ratschläge für das eigene Leben. Ich musste sehr oft schmunzeln und lachen, konnte ihm aber auch wirklich oft zustimmen und habe über einiges, was er geschrieben hat, noch Tage später nachgedacht.
Er war der 2. Mensch auf dem Mond, obwohl er vom Missionsplan eigentlich der 1. gewesen wäre. Aber so, wie sie letztendlich in der Eagle saßen, war es wesentlich einfacher, das Neil zuerst ausgestiegen ist. Ich fand es toll, wie er zugab, am Anfang neidisch auf Neil gewesen zu sein, aber auch eingesehen hat dass Neil einfach der Richtige war. Buzz ist heute sogar froh, nicht der 1. Mensch gewesen zu sein.
Er gibt auch unglaublich viele private Einblicke in sein Leben, z.B. wie es ihm und seiner Familie mit seiner Alkoholsucht ging. Natürlich hat er auch über die Marsmission geschrieben. Dabei kann ich ihm nur zustimmen und seine Argumente sind wirklich gut und schlüssig, meiner Meinung nach.
Viele sagen ja, wir können noch nicht zum Mars, weil kein Rückflug garantiert ist. Aber Buzz Aldrin hat recht, die ersten Siedler, die nach Amerika kamen, haben sich auch keine Gedanken gemacht, ob sie wieder zurückkommen. Und auch der Flug zum Mond war riskant, es gab keine Garantie, dass sie zurück kommen, aber wir haben trotzdem gemacht! Und es gibt genug Leute, die sich diesen Risiken bewusst sind und trotzdem sofort losfliegen würde, z.b. die Mars One Mission.
Am Ende des Buches hatte ich einen richtigen Kloß im Hals. Er schrieb wie es für ihn war, als er von Neils Tod erfahren hat und wie die Beerdigung war und wie er und Michael nun die 50 Jahre Apollo 11 ohne Neil feiern müssen.
