„One in a Million“ by Lindsey Kelk is definitely one of my highlights of the year!

I have to say that I already thought about buying it last year around Christmas time, but well, Christmas time, etc. you know it. Now I was on vacation and there was this book in the library! Of course it was the chance and I took it with me.
I think I have seldom laughed so hard while reading a book, and I have been able to identify with both characters.
It’s about Annie Higgins, who gave up love and anyway she’s way too busy for that. Also, she just took on a totally crazy challenge to make a totally random and weird Instagram account famous in 30 days!
She is the total influencer, loves everything that has to do with the media and also works in this area.
Then she meets Dr. Samuel Page, historian and social media hater. The perfect „victim“ for Annie. In addition, his relationship has just broken up. Under the pretext of helping Samuel to get his ex back, she opens his Instagram profile, styles him, brings him closer to social media, etc. But of course everything in the hope of winning the challenge.
But what the two learn, especially about themselves, in these 30 days is most interesting.

I had to laugh so much, Dr. Samuel is a total nerd, but I could still identify with him a lot. Why should you change for someone else, why should you chase someone, why didn’t your ex-girlfriend say earlier what bothers her, etc. And otherwise, I found many of his statements very appropriate and could only agree with them. He often reminded me of Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.
Annie, on the other hand, is the complete opposite, history? Who cares? Instagram, social media, that is her life and that is also the most important thing, how you present yourself on the net.
I could identify with Annie, too, although in the end. Nevertheless, I agree with her, nowadays social media platforms have a very important role in our society and in order to get a lot of followers, it is important how you present yourself, even if you totally bend overboard for it. Personally, I can’t understand that, of course you are happy about every like and follower, but I want to stay who I am and not pretend and for that I gladly accept fewer followers.

As I said, the book is a total highlight of the year for me, it’s funny, interesting and I thought about myself a lot while reading it, probably because I could identify with both protagonists and it addresses many issues in our society.

I recommend the book to everyone who likes a love story (with or without a happy ending, I won’t tell you;)) with a lot of humor, but also to people who like to think about our society, maybe also want to think about themselves.
It was not a pure love story for me, but one that partly shows the problems our society has with social media and thus makes you think.

„One in a Million“ by Lindsey Kelk zählt auf jeden Fall zu meinen Jahreshighlight!

Ich muss sagen, dass ich schon letztes Jahr, um die Weihnachtszeit, überlegt hatte, es mir zu kaufen, aber naja Weihnachtszeit usw. man kennt es ja. Nun war ich im Urlaub und dort gab es dieses Buch in der Bibliothek! Natürlich war das die Chance und ich hab es direkt mitgenommen.
Ich habe, denke ich, selten bei einem Buch so sehr gelacht und mich mit beiden Charaktern identifizieren können.
Es geht um Annie Higgins, die die Liebe aufgegeben hat und eh ist sie viel zu beschäftigt dafür. Außerdem hat sie gerade eine total verrückte Challenge angenommen, ein total random und merkwürdigen Instagram-Account berühmt machen, innerhalb von 30 Tagen!
Sie ist der totale Influenzer, liebt alles was mit Medien zu tun hat und arbeitet eben auch in diesem Bereich.
Dann trifft sie Dr. Samuel Page, Historiker und hasser der Sozialen Medien. Das perfekte „Opfer“ für Annie. Außerdem ist zudem gerade seine Beziehung in die Brüche gegangen. Unter dem Vorwand Samuel zu helfen, seine Ex wieder zu bekommen, eröffnet sie ihm das Instagram Profil, stylt ihn um, bringt ihn die Sozialen Medien näher usw. Natürlich aber auch alles in der Hoffnung, so die Challenge zu gewinnen.
Doch was die beiden, vor allem über sich selbst, in diesen 30 Tagen lernen, ist am interessantesten.

Ich musste so lachen, Dr. Samuel ist ein total Nerd, aber trotzdem konnte ich mich sehr mit ihm identifizieren. Warum soll man sicher für jemand anderen ändern, warum soll man jemand hinter her laufen, warum hat seine Ex-Freundin nicht früher gesagt was sie stört usw. Und auch sonst, fand ich viele seiner Aussagen sehr passend und konnte ihnen nur zustimmen. Oft hat er mich auch an Sheldon, aus The Big Bang Theory erinnert.
Annie dagegen ist eben das totale Gegenteil, Geschichte? Wen interessiert das? Instagram, Sozial Media, dass ist ihr Leben und das ist auch das wichtigste, wie man sich präsentiert im Netz.
Auch mit Annie konnte ich mich identifizieren, wobei eher am Ende. Trotzdem stimme ich ihr zu, heutzutage haben Sozial Media Plattformen eine sehr wichtige Rolle in unserer Gesellschaft und um viele Follower zu bekommen, ist es wichtig wie man sich präsentiert, auch wenn man sich dafür total verbiegt. Das kann ich persönlich nicht nachvollziehen, natürlich freut man sich über jeden Like und Follower, aber ich möchte bleiben, wer ich bin und mich nicht verstellen und dafür nehme ich auch gerne weniger Follower in kauf.

Wie gesagt, dass Buch ist ein totales Jahreshighlight für mich, es ist lustig, interessant und ich habe über mich selber viel nachgedacht beim lesen, wahrscheinlich, weil ich mich mit beiden Protagonisten identifizieren konnte und es viele Themen unserer Gesellschaft anspricht.
Ich habe das Buch auf englisch gelesen und muss sagen, der Schreibstil ist total angenehem und leicht zu verstehen. Mein englisch ist nicht schlecht, aber auch nicht super gut und habe alles ohne Probleme verstanden. Soweit ich weiß, gibt es das Buch auch momentan nur auf englisch.

Ich empfehle jeden das Buch, der eine Liebesgeschichte (Ob mit oder ohne Happy End, sag ich euch nicht 😉 ) mit viel witz mag, aber auch Leuten, die gerne über unsere Gesellschaft nachdenken, vielleicht auch über sich nachdenken wollen.
Es ist keine reine Liebesgeschichte für mich gewesen, sondern eine, die teilweise die Probleme unserer Gesellschaft mit Sozial Media aufzeigt und so zum nachdenken anregt.
Ihr solltet keine totalen Anfänger in der englischen Sprache sein, aber müsst auch keine Profis sein um es zu verstehen.
